Who we are

MyBasirah is a platform that encourages beneficial, principled and spiritually responsible Islamic engagement and helps Muslims reflect on the influence of the content they consume. This policy explains how we handle personal data when you use the website and its features.

What information we may collect

  • Account identity data when you sign in with Google, Facebook/Meta or email, such as your name and email address as provided by the sign-in service.
  • Information you provide voluntarily, such as your name or email when you choose to include them on a reflection, recommendation, endorsement or contact form.
  • Reflections you submit about public figures, including the signals you select.
  • Recommendations of public figures for consideration, including any details you enter.
  • Charter endorsement submissions, including any name and details you provide.
  • Contact form messages, including the name, email, subject and message you enter.
  • Basic technical and security data such as IP address, device, browser and session information, processed by our infrastructure to operate the service and protect it from abuse.

Where an analytics provider is connected, it may collect standard analytics data such as page views and visit patterns. No analytics provider is currently connected; this section will apply only if and when one is added.

How we use your data

  • to provide and maintain your account and the My Activity area
  • to operate the public figure, reflection, moderation and Charter features
  • to process recommendations and endorsements
  • to respond to enquiries and contact form messages
  • to maintain security, prevent abuse and enforce the Terms of Use
  • to send necessary service communications, such as sign-in links

Sign-in with Google or Facebook/Meta

When you sign in with Google or Facebook/Meta, we use the identity information those services share solely for authentication and account functionality, such as creating and recognising your account. We do not receive or store your Google or Meta password. We request only standard identity, profile and email scopes unless we inform you of a change in future.

Public and private information

Public aggregate reflections are based on self-reported experiences and are presented as patterns for reflection, not as factual judgements or certifications of any individual. Your private account details, contact messages and the email address attached to a reflection, recommendation or endorsement are not displayed publicly.

How data is shared

We do not sell personal data. We may share information with necessary service providers that help us operate the service, such as hosting, authentication, database, email delivery and sign-in providers, who process data on our behalf under their own terms. We may also disclose information where required by law or to protect the rights, safety or property of users and the service.

How long we keep data

We retain personal data only for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the service, support moderation, and meet legal, security and accountability obligations. After that, data is deleted or anonymised.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, including the right to access, correct or request deletion of your personal data, or to ask us to close your account. You can exercise these rights by contacting us at the addresses below. We may ask for information to verify your identity before acting on a request.

Children

MyBasirah is not designed to knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.

Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data. However, no method of transmission or storage over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will review the "Last updated" date above when we do. Continued use of MyBasirah after a change indicates your acceptance of the updated policy.
